Books for Keeps is a local Athens initiative aimed at donating books to children and low-income families in grades Pre-K through 12. For 11 months of the year, BFK collects, inspects, sorts and boxes books, only to give them all away in May. Books for Keeps’ primary goal is to end the “summer slide,” the learning loss suffered by many children when they are away from school. Many low-income families are disproportionately affected by this loss, often due to a simple lack of books.

Last week, Books for Keeps founder Melaney Smith was named one of 10 Women of Worth by L’OrealParis. This wonderful honor will bring $10,000 to Books for Keeps and qualifies BFK for another $25,000 based on the results of an online voting competition through November 20th.

Click the link above to vote and tell L’Oreal that this $25,000 grant should come home to our community, where it will enable Books for Keeps to reach as many as 800 additional children.
You can vote DAILY, and will have the opportunity on November 17 to vote for Melaney via Facebook and Twitter.
